The Portrait of the Crying Clown

Long, Long time ago I traveled in a three ringed circus show
Sweeping spotlights from a dark and dusty floor
As I made the people laugh I cried for more
But the tears they never could erase a perfect painted face

And it was all a masquerade cause every time the lights went down the smile would fade
And it wasn’t even worth the pennies paid
To see an actor just act upon a stage
Cause what they were after was the laughter of the heart
The only missing part

And now the Crying Clown
He travels to the towns
Giving back to them the smile he never found
Cause through the aging years buried under all those tears
He finally found the only missing part
The Laughter of the Heart

After all those years here I stand within the circus of my fears
The seats are empty, there’s not a single soul in sight
But in the center ring I stand laughing in the light
You see I finally found the most important part
The Laughter of the Heart
