God Made The Stars

"God Made the Stars" is one of my favorite stories and I'm sure will be until the day I leave this earth. It was given to me late one summer evening by my son Taylor who was 4 years old at the time. It happened one night when we returned from a family trip. Everytime we came home after dark, I would carry Taylor down the road for a walk. The stars were scattered in the sky, and being a songwriter, I made up this little song:

God Made the Stars for you and me
God ade the Stars for us to see
God Made the Stars for you and me
God Made the Stars for Taylor and Daddy

One night as I finished singing, Taylor looked into my eyes and said, " Daddy, Where is God?" It was such a surprise to me. But because Im serious about my child understanding, I though for a moment about my answer. Finally, I looked at him and said, " God id not in the stars...far away. Son, God is in your heart." He seemed a little bored with my answer and laid his head back on my shoulder.

Later on that week, I wanted to test Taylor and see what he would say, so I asked him, "Taylor, where is God?" He paused and said, " He is in your heart." Then he said something I shall never forget. "Daddy, how does God come out?" What a question. People have been asking that question since the beginning of time. But in that moment it came to me...the deepest theology in the world.

"Taylor, God comes out when I love you and when you love me.
God comes out when we love."
