A Prayer for Michael
Still as you sleep
Innocent and young
Unaware of the world around you
I sit and watch you until late in the night
The small light flickering by your crib
Your toys scattered across the room
As I quietly brush your cheek
A tear gently trickles down my face
It falls on you and I wipe it away
You are my son
My flesh and blood
The very heartbeat of my life
I close my eyes and see you growing up
Every minute I wish to stop and hold
But even now time is moving on
Yes it seems like yesterday that you were born
But you have already taken your first step
And said my name
God I loved you when you said my name
It made me understand why I live
And soon, all to soon, the years will go by
I can see your first day at school
The games you will learn to play
In and out the backdoor you will go
Another day of hide and seek
And make believer pretend and then
I will tuck you in
And watch you sleep again
You will have your glory days
They are just around the corner
Baseball cards, Football games
Your senior prom, the day that you get married
And then the night that you sit and watch your son quietly sleep
Life is a circle my son
That never ends
And yes you will one day know how very much I loved you
My only prayer as I sit and watch you breathe
Is that God will hold you in His Hands
For you see I dont have all the answers
And sometimes I dont know if I have any at all
I have to depend that He will guide you
For your little brown eyes have not seen the hatred of men
And your silky smooth skin has not felt
The cold wind of a stormy raging world
Before I prayed tonight I thought of these things
And searched for a way to protect you
To shelter you from a world that I have come to know
To fight and defend you from all th battles you will face
But I searched every corner of my mind
And I found no answer
And falling to my knees I prayed this prayer for you
For you see this is all I have to depend on
When all else is gone
The love of God remains
Oh God just as you have touched my life
Reach out now and place your strong but gentle hand on Michael
Teach him your ways
Let him know that it is not weakness to say I love you and serve the needs of others
Let him grow to know the peace and abundance of life in which you and only you can give
Use me as unworthy as I am
To show him how to pray
And to read Your Word
To stay steadfast in your loving will
There is nothing more to say
This is my prayer for Michael
Sleep now my son for tomorrow will come all to soon
And then I can only hope that you will choose
To stay where you father has placed you
In the Hands of God
